In an orthodox Jewish community, usually the synagogue is the center of the community because by Jewish law you are not allowed to drive on the Sabbath. Thus, most members walk to services that occur on the Sabbath. According to a resident that I interviewed, he considered that this synagogue was the center for the entire community A synagogue is not only a place for prayer, but also socializing with the rest of the Jewish community. The socializing usually occurs immediately after prayers with snacks and refreshments for everyone. Here, everyone gathers in a large room and converses with each other. For Jewish communities to thrive, they must have two of the following: Synagogues and schools. Toco Hills has many and a variety of each. In the Jewish community in Toco Hills, there are four major synagogues located on Lavista Road. The two biggest are Young Israel of Toco Hills and Congregation Beth Jacob. Congregation Beth Jacob currently has the largest building and because of that, for many, it is considered to be the center of the Toco Hills Jewish Community. My family associates with both synagogues.
